Sarah Polley plays Sara Stanley in this rather stuffy British family drama set on a small island. After her father's funeral, Sara finds herself drawn to a gypsy at a traveling carnival to communicate with his spirit. She soon discovers that the woman is a phony and she threatens to go to the constable, but the woman's lunkish husband grabs her the pair end up kidnapping her for ransom. Sara is kept tied up in the back of the show wagon as it makes its way into the wilderness, but the girl wakes up and seeing hole in the floor, she slips off one of her white shoes and later a lace handkerchief and feeds them through the hole, making a trail for rescuers to follow. Later, her Uncle Alec follows her spoor to the wagon nestled under some trees, but is shot and wounded by the kidnapper and joins Sara as a prisoner inside. He's semi-hogtied on the floor and Sara is tied to a chair and after a tender family moment, he gets Sara to scoot her chair over to fetch a meat-cutting blade of some sort so he can cut her loose. Afterward he kicks a bigger hole in the wagon floor and Sara crawls out.
