In this collection of panels, May and June the larcenous Summer Sisters fall in with crime lord The Brow and become his wage slaves and forced to earn 25 dollars a day running errands for him, using a timed spiked machine as incentive. As one sister is sent off, the other is strapped into a chair with the spike machine around one leg, which will only be shut off if the girl arrives in time, otherwise the device with perforate her leg.
I'm frequently surprised by how dark and violent these old comics really were. There's torture, shootings, drowning, people getting frozen or scalded to death, it's all rather grisly.
