Toward the beginning of the movie, Yolande Palfrey plays the first victim who is taken by horse drawn wagon in manacles to the assigned location outside the monster's lair. She's hooded, and her shackles anchored high overhead to a post. The attendants flee as the dragon begins to draw close and the girl for her part removes her hood and tears her wrists badly in a valiant, albeit futile effort to escape being burned to ashes. Later in the film, when its revealed that only peasant girls are being put into the lottery to determine who is sacrificed, Princess Elspeth (played by Chloe Salaman) rigs the next drawing and offers her own life instead. Our would-be hero steps in to save her, but the king's fighter Tyrian intervenes "for the good of the kingdom". Aided by his magical spear, our hero cuts the princess's chains, but her sense of noblesse oblige trumps her sense of self preservation and she throws herself into the dragon's pit to become lunch, while the boys fight it out.
