In this drama set in Chile, Blanca Trueba (Winona Ryder) who is arrested on suspicion of being in league with "rebels" after a conspiracy between some Conservative Party members and the military leads to a coup d'état, and the military takes control of the country. Under the control of the military, people associated with the People's Party are captured and even killed. Blanca confides to her father the whereabouts of her lover Pedro, a known People's party leader and begs him to help the man escape the country. Blanca is handcuffed and put in a jeep and later blindfolded. She's taken to an interrogation room where she's roughly questioned and slapped. Afterward she's taken to back to interrogation with her hands cuffed behind her, still blindfolded. Her interrogator (actually her half-brother) brutally attacks her again.
