In this adventure, a wealthy widow turns her back on the world to find solace with the church and gives her house over to the abbey for the rent of a single white rose each year. But after one admirer is found stabbed, and one of her workmen is found drowned, Judith herself is kidnapped by a would-be suitor who has been disowned by his father as a drunk and a wastrel. As Brother Cadfael and a magistrate examine the scene of the abduction for clues, Judith Perle (Kitty Aldridge) is seen cleave gagged with her arms tied up behind her back by her abductor who has hidden her in the attic of his filthy home. As he tries in vain to prove himself to her, one of the henchmen in on the plot climbs a rope outside to spy on the scene.
