
In Stanley Kubrick's debut film, a group of soldiers caught behind enemy lines capture a mute local girl (played by Virginia Leith). They bind her by her arms to a tree with two duty belts and while the rest of the team goes in search of a lost raft which will help them escape, they leave a young troubled soldier in charge of the girl despite his misgivings. Left alone, he's revealed to be mentally disturbed and alternately rants and charms and tries to seduce the captive girl. He offers to untie her arms so she can hold him, but instead she escapes, and the young man draws his service pistol...
