Briefly, in a flashback Charlotte Dupres (Polly Walker) is shown shackled and gagged in a secret chamber by the evil alchemist Paracelsus, as she's used as a guinea pig to test out the Philosopher's Stone, which confers immortality to whomever breathes its fumes, after its properly heated with the right equipment.
