In this episode an alien intelligence takes over Smallville, infecting the citizens with its parasitic tendrils which link their minds together. Martha Kent is taken to the hospital by a well-intentioned Supergirl, but is surprised later to find her on her feet, supposedly well. Martha and the attending physicians turn on Supergirl, spewing binding tendrils from their mouths. Supergirl is quickly overwhelmed and secured and even gagged by the tendrils until Superman intervenes and begins blasting the things with X-ray vision which causes the tendrils to melt and evaporate.
